Le Bioimaging Center Lille-Nord de France (BICeL) a été créé le 1er janvier 2010 suite à une restructuration de l’imagerie cellulaire et tissulaire dans le Nord de la France. Il résulte de la mutualisation des ressources humaines et des équipements disponibles sur les sites des campus de l’Université des Sciences et Techniques de Lille (USTL-Lille 1), de la Faculté de Médecine (CHRU-Lille 2) et du campus Calmette (Institut Pasteur de Lille et Institut de Biologie de Lille). Ces trois plates-formes sont affiliées aux différents Instituts Fédératifs de Recherche de site respectivement IFR147, IFR114 et IFR142. Cette restructuration accompagne celles qui ont lieu en Région. Ainsi le Bioimaging Center Lille-Nord de France est il reconnu comme l’infrastructure du PRES Lille Nord de France mais au-delà c’est celle de tous les Instituts et Centres de Recherche du Nord de la France. Il est également ouvert aux industriels qui ont besoin d’expertises ou d’un accès à des équipements d’imagerie.
Le personnel est actuellement constitué de 6 chercheurs et enseignants-chercheurs et 15 ingénieurs et techniciens qui animent la formation et la gestion du parc d’instruments mis à disposition de la communauté scientifique sur 5 plateaux : microscopies à force atomique, électronique et photonique, criblage à haut-débit et haut-contenu et cytométrie en flux.
En 2010, le BiCeL a obtenu une labélisation par le GIS-IBiSA et il a été porteur avec succès d’un projet EquipEX (ImaginEX BioMed classé 1er). Ce projet d’imagerie innovante d’excellence dans le domaine biomédical propose d’établir un pipeline du criblage à haut-débit en milieux de confinements 1-2-3 jusqu’à l’analyse à très haut-contenu en imagerie de super résolution (AFM, PALM/STORM-STED, et microscopie corrélative [électronique-photonique-champ proche]). Le projet repose sur une douzaine de projets dans les domaines de l’obésité, du cancer et des maladies infectieuses et inflammatoires. Pour les années à venir, la mise en place de ce projet verra une montée en puissance dans les ressources (humaines et en équipements) que des expertises liées aux activités de criblage et d’analyse à haute résolution.
La politique menée est basée sur une volonté affichée de répondre aux besoins des recherches de grandes visibilités effectuées en Région. Le but du BICeL est certes d’apporter un soutien à cet effort de recherche mais également au niveau national et international surtout en considérant les développements originaux dans les secteurs du champ proche appliqué au domaine biomédical et de la microscopie biophotonique multimodale. Les maîtres mots sont service-développement-transfert-formation avec un effort de flexibilité pour répondre aux attentes des utilisateurs.

The BioImaging Center Lille-Nord de France (BICeL) was created on January 1st, 2010 in the context of a functional structuring renewal of cell and tissue imaging core facilities in Northern France. BICeL is the result of the pooling of human and equipment resources available on the campuses of the Lille University of Sciences and Technologies, the Lille Medical School and the Lille Pasteur Institute, which are affiliated to the corresponding Federative Research Institutes (IFR) IFR147, IFR114 and IFR142, respectively. This functional structuring occurred in parallel to those taking place in the Northern France region. The BioImaging Center Lille-Nord de France is thus recognized to be the infrastructure not only of the PRES Lille Nord de France, which gathers 6 Universities and 2 Engineering Schools, 130,000 students, 4,600 scientists and teaching staff, and 3,000 Ph.D students) but also of any Northern France Institute and Research Center. It is also open to scientists from the industry who need expertise and access to imaging equipment.
The staff currently consists of 6 researchers and faculty members as well as 15 engineers and technicians, who are in charge of the trainings and management of imaging systems in the 5 facilities open to the scientific community: atomic force, electron and photonic microscopies, high-content and high-throughput screening and flow cytometry.
In 2010, BICeL was approved by the national scientific interest group in core facilities in Biology, Heath and Agronomy (GIS-IBiSA), and in 2011 a project was selected for the Investment for the Future Program of Excellence, namely ImaginEx BioMed, which ranked 1st and was granted up to 6.8 Million €. This funding was abounded in 2012 with 7.6 Million € from funds from the EU-Region-State. This biomedical, outstanding, and innovative imaging project consists in establishing a pipeline from high-throughput screening in level-1-2-3 containment areas down to high-content superresolution imaging (AFM, PALM/STORM-STED, and correlative microscopy [electron – photonic - near-field]). The ImaginEx BioMed project relies on a dozen of research projects in the fields of obesity, cancer, infectious and inflammatory diseases. For years to come, an increase in human and equipment resources as well as in the expertise in screening and high-resolution analyses will accompany the course of the project. The Facility will grow to more than 68 working stations involving 34 staff and 24 FTE.
Our overall policy relies on the declared commitment to meet the needs of high-visibility research studies held in the Northern France region. Beyond its technological support to local research, BICeL also contributes nationally and internationally through original developments in the fields of near-field microscopy applied to biomedical research as well as multimodal biophotonics. The key words are service - development - technology transfer - training with some degree of flexibility to fulfill users’ expectations.
